What I got for Christmas 2013

What a Christmas! I have been ridiculously busy since the end of November with university, my teaching placement and work. Even though I was working on Christmas day, boxing day and well, most of the past 2 weeks, I’ve had a lovely time. On the 23rd we celebrated my boyfriend Craig’s birthday and a few days later our three year anniversary while on Christmas Day after work and dinner with my family, I headed over to his house for an evening of games with his family. My household has never been one for “family time” so it was nice to experience that kind of atmosphere for the first time in my life.

I was really spoilt this year for gifts, especially by Craig. He got me not one, but two Disney Designer Dolls! Maleficent was from last years collection but sold out before I could get my hands on her. Seeing as i collect her merchandise, there was a squeal of delight when I spotted the packaging. He managed to track her down for me as well as splurging on this years super amazing Fairytale couples collection. Belle and the Beast sold out within a day so I’m so happy and surprised that he got them for me. I’m a bit of a nerd when it comes to the designer dolls and aim to have them all one day (particularly the villains, 2 down 4 to go), but alas they are so expensive. As well as the dolls, I got a Maleficent mug and hardback Lord of the Rings book. Well and truly spoilt.

The gift from my parents was so random yet super exciting. I have never sewn anything in my life, so upon unwrapping a John Lewis sewing machine I was rather confused. Fast forward a few hours and already I was thinking of projects to do, ordering accessories and becoming a little obsessed with clothes making and DIY furnishings. Unfortunately I haven't had time to play with it yet, but when work quietens down I can see its going to become a great hobby.

Of course it wouldn't be Christmas without a mega unhealthy amount of chocolate. My insides probably look horrific right now after the amount of sugar I've eaten this week. Below is pretty much everything I received! On the left is gifts from my best friends, in the middle from my boyfriend and on the right are gifts from my parents, sister, uncle & family, boyfriends mum and boyfriends sister.

One of the most exciting parts of Christmas, for me, is seeing people open the gifts I have gotten them. As part of Craig’s gift, we set up a “hogwarts letter” situation with letters in the fireplace, a hat and wand on the mantle with his Hogwarts letter waiting to invite him to the Harry Potter studio tour in London. Saying he was excited is an understatement. Me and my sister also got Dad a bread maker which has made the house smell delicious all week. Yummy!

Golden Fairy Dust Christmas Nails

My damaged post-acrylic suffering nails have finally grown out just in time for this festive season and I plan to thoroughly make up for lost nail painting time. I'm apparently continuing on with my unintentional golden Christmas theme today in the form of a favourite seasonal combination! I love metallic tones at this time of year and whose going to say no to glitter really? Gold is a colour i only ever wear on my eyes or nails, I’m generally a silver kind of girl when it comes to the likes of jewellery etc. Come to think of it, i only ever really wear gold makeup around Christmas, apart from touches of my much loved Sugarpill Goldilux Chromalust as that is just happiness in a jar. Note to self; use more gold = pretty.

After my OPI Base Coat I painted on two layers of Disney’s Queen of Hearts, a gorgeous almost antique gold with flecks of glitter. Following was a generous coat of China Glaze Fairy Dust, my all time favourite glitter nail polish. Just look at its holographic sparkle! It’s so satisfying sitting by a lit Christmas Tree waving my fingers back and forth to admire the pretty glitter. Warning: May pose a risk of looking a little bit silly haha. When organizing my makeup last month I found some Perfect 10 Nail Stickers which were long forgotten, so of course I had to add some cute little flowers to each nail. They may not look cliché Christmassy but they sure are pretty. To finish I used OPI Rapid-Dry Top Coat which made my nails work-ready in a jiffy.

Gold Glitter Christmas Makeup

With December comes the official start of the Christmas season! It’s absolutely my favourite time of year and although I’m going to be a busy girl with work (I’m even working on Christmas day boo!), university and my college teaching placement, I’m not going to let it dampen my Christmas cheer. On Sunday I truly welcomed December by heading into Manchester with the boyfriend & his family for a lovely meal and a nose around the Christmas market. What started with a neutral makeup look quickly escalated to glitter and a bold lip. What’s nice about this is its still rather wearable and not too over the top. I would be more than happy to wear this to the Christmas Party Nights at work. All’s I did was place a bit of Urban Decay’s Half Baked on the lid, Buck and Darkhorse in the crease, a quick pattering of some Gold Paris Berlin Glitter before finishing with a flick and lashing of mascara. Rather simple but eye catching.

Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish Review

When it comes to skincare, Liz Earle are by far at the top of my list. Natural and leaping bunny certified, I’ve noticed a big difference when using their products. One of said products happens to be the popular Cleanse & Polish. I first tried a sample of this in my second year of university and adored it, though for some reason never got around to purchasing the full size. Fast forward over a year later and its become a staple in my skincare routine. I’m a water and flannel girl through and through, so this fits in perfectly. Cleanse & Polish removes every little scrap of makeup through to the toughest mascara, leaving my skin feeling beautifully soft. The packaging nicely reflects their natural element and the useful pump dispenses the perfect amount of product so there is no wastage.

As I mentioned in my Instant Boost Skin Tonic Review, my skin hasn’t been the best since coming home from Florida. C&P in combination with Skin Tonic has definitely helped clear it up, leaving my face feeling fresh, moisturised and smooth. Would I repurchase? I already have!

Pros: Nice packaging, Handy pump, Removes makeup effectively, Leaves skin feeling soft, Helps clear skin, Cruelty free.
Cons: A bit of a strong smell.

This week saw me graduate from Southampton Solent University with a BA(Hons) degree in Photography. It’s strange to think that three years has passed already! For my outfit I didn't want anything too extravagant. Even though I had the choice to splurge, I went for budget options. This was half due to not wanting to spend loads of money but also that nowhere had anything I liked that was appropriate! I already had an idea of what i wanted to get before hand so ended up piecing together things bit by bit. The best thing about this outfit is that I can easily wear it at work (I start teaching at a college in Manchester on Wednesday). I went for a short sleeved blouse with lace detailing which I tucked into a patterned skater skirt, topped with a casual blazer style jacket. Brogues seemed like the safest option so I didn't fall flat on my face while going on stage and mickey mouse tights, need I say more? My boyfriend bought me the Evenstar necklace for my birthday and I simply couldn't receive my degree without a bit of geekery, could I?

Luckily I didn't fall on my face and am now officially a photography graduate. Afterwards me and my parents went for a lovely Italian before heading to meet some of my friends to say a final goodbye to Southampton. Unexpectedly I ended up staying out way later than planned, visiting my old haunt “The Hobbit Pub” (oh how I'm going to miss that place). Dad also treated me to a soft toy of Olaf (from new Disney movie Frozen) the next day while I got myself a Kindle Fire HD, graduation was just an excuse for that one really haha.

Overall it was a nice day and officially marks the start of my adult life. I’m currently pursuing a post-graduate teaching degree with plans to teach photography and art history as a source of income while I work on my own practice.

Winter Lip Saviours

Lip care has always been something I have used but never really paid much attention too. Does it stop them from becoming chapped? Yes. Is it a reasonable price? Yes. Sorted. Since coming back from America late August, my top lip became annoyingly chapped. I tried using my much loved EOS, Blistex, Burt's Bees, LUSH and a number of miscellaneous brands all to no avail. I suffered with this for around 2 months as I really didn't want to splurge on the likes of Jack Black at the risk that it wouldn't work (plus I’ve only recently gotten pennies!). That is until someone recommended I use Vaseline. I’m sure every girl has used this obsessively at some point in their life, I’m no exception. Since becoming interested in beauty though, i have always just thought it acts as a barrier and doesn't actually do anything for sore skin. Oh boy was I shocked when mere minuets after applying this, my lips felt so much more moisturised and well, basically felt great. Queue using it for a few more days and bye bye chapped lips. I’m now using this in combination with a Burt's Bees lip balm which, as you can see in the image, has had rather a lot of handbag love to the point where the packaging has just rubbed off. I know my Crème Brulee Vaseline is a little old now, but it works and smells delicious. Come at me cold weather!

Organize My Makeup With Me

With makeup flowing over onto my desk and lipsticks making their home in the most random of places, new storage has been at the forefront of my mind. So when a trip to Ikea presented itself, I pretty much knew what I was going to get. Or did I? The Alex 9 draw units are the most popular choice for makeup storage these days and I had every intention on jumping on that bandwagon. At £90 they aren’t cheap, but they’re just so perfect don’t you agree? After some moments spent oohing and ahhing over the decision to get the 9 draw over the 5 draw I finally decided that i might as well splurge. That is until I reached bargain corner. There, in perfect condition, fully assembled for £40 was the Alex 5 draw. As someone who has been saving money for the whole of 2013, i couldn't say no really as it was £50 cheaper than what I was originally going to spend and with Christmas looming I couldn’t break the habit. Looking back now I probably should have gotten the 9 draw and kind of wish I had, but these are definitely a good investment and I can see them housing my teaching documents (I’m currently a trainee teacher) in the future if I upgrade. Plus they were already assembled! Anyone else hate putting together furniture as much as I do?

After fiddling around I’ve condensed my makeup into 4 draws (not including nail polish) with the bottom being used for general beauty products. I did not realise how much makeup I had and how much I rarely use so organizing it all has made rediscover some unloved products, always a good thing. I decided to bring you all with me when I started filling up the Alex by filming the process in an “Organize My Makeup With Me” style video. I personally love seeing how people store their products so I hope this post/video gives you some ideas and a little insight into my growing collection.

Catching Fire Inspired Makeup: The Tribute Parade

In anticipation for the second instalment of The Hunger Games I’ve done a look inspired by a clip from the trailer. I’m a fan of the franchise, although definitely not as obsessed as my sister who collection anything and everything Hunger Games. I’m more of a Tolkien girl. Nonetheless, the makeup worn by heroine Katniss Everdeen in the trailers looks astounding, so I had to re-create it. The look is a harsh dark eye with golden swirls flicking outwards paired with a nude lip (not shown well in the image above) although I used a more smokey effect with gold and silver detailing. Not as dramatic but alot more wearable.

Liz Earle Instant Boost Skin Tonic Review

I’ve never been one to regularly use a toner. Heck, I don't think I’ve used one more than a handful of times ever before this. They are generally seen as a little old fashioned these days, chemical exfoliates such as Pixi Glow taking the front line. My sister bought me the Liz Earle Skincare Essentials set as an early birthday present a few months ago (more like gave me the money for it ha!), which contained a full size of the Instant Boost Skin Tonic. I’d been moaning about wanting some new skincare for a while and gosh am i glad I went for this.

One of the main reasons I love Liz Earle is they are part of the Leaping Bunny Family, meaning they’re cruelty free (although they are owned by Avon who do unfortunately sell in China). This is increasingly becoming essential when I buy from brands. Not only that, their products contain a host of natural ingredients and the Skin Tonic itself contains no animal extracts. Their packaging reflects this natural ethos while remaining simple yet practical. The scent is floral yet not too overpowering, reminding you again of that natural element. Claiming to refresh, sooth and brighten, Liz Earle Skin Tonic is suitable for all skin types. It’s lack of alcohol contributes to its non-drying properties, if anything it add moisture.

I can genuinely see a difference using this product and can prove it! I first started using it before I jetted off to Florida for the summer. A squirt on a cotton pad wiped across my face after using Cleanse & Polish. Over the summer my skin was the best its ever been since becoming a teenager. How do I know Skin Tonic was a major contributor? I had kept everything else in my skincare routine exactly the same apart from C&P. Even after than ran out, my skin remained amazing. As soon as the toner ran out though, my skin went downhill. I do know that the humidity levels in Florida helped and my skin is having a moisture relapse in returning to the UK but, here's the thing. I repurchased Skin Tonic about 2 weeks ago and can already see a difference. I honestly believe it’s working miracles and helping to clear up imperfections. It leaves my skin feeling fresh, makes sure all my makeup has gone and just generally gives it that little bit of a boost.

Pros: Natural, Cruelty free, Non drying, Adds moisture, Leaves skin feeling fresh, Contributes to clearer skin.
Cons: Some may not like the scent.

Beautifully Disney L’Amour Mauve Eyeshadow Palette Review

I have quite a bit of Disney makeup which has yet to be shown here, so each week I’m now going to have a dedicated Disney day where I review a piece or create a Disney makeup look! Just another way to fuel my obsession. I’ve been pretty busy with my teaching degree these past few months but half term has arrived. Incoming lots of post scheduling.

Luckily I managed to pick this up for 75% off in cast connections back when I worked for Walt Disney World as the outer packaging was a little bit battered. It is part of the Unlock the Spell collection which is inspired around Tiana, Belle and Rapunzel. I’m always pleasantly surprised by Walt Disney Company makeup. I never expect it to be as high quality as it is. The packaging reminds me of Sugarpill and is decorated with silhouettes of the three princesses. The shadows themselves are very soft, possibly too soft as I’ve heard of some shattering during shipping. This isn't really something you would want to risk travel with. The colours are beautifully pigmented though and blend easily, being complimentary to each other. Looks can definitely be created just by using this palette on its own. I really enjoy using these beauties, they can be used for a more “work appropriate” daytime look as well as a more dramatic evening look. I personally have been using #1 on the lid and brow bone while using #2 and #3 to define/blend out in the crease.

The only downside is this is currently only available at Walt Disney World, Disneyland and the US Disney Store Website. The previous collection has popped up on the UK Disney Store website though so I’m going to keep my eyes peeled in future.

Pros: Cute packaging, Soft, Blendable, Pigmented, Complimentary to each other.
Cons: Availability, Shadows aren’t named, Maybe a little too soft.

Moroccan Oil Hair Treatment Review

I have to hold my hands up here and say I'm not the best at looking after my hair. Hair care comes in at the bottom of my beauty essentials list, so when I'm on a budget it suffers (I’ve only just bought some heat protection spray after being out for 2 months, oops!) So needless to say it’s always in need of a little bit of TLC. Enter the must raved about Moroccan Oil*. This burst onto the scene a couple of years ago as THE hair care product. Since then I’ve tried a few high street offerings so when I was contacted to review this I did a little victory dance becoming pretty excited to see what all the fuss was about.

At first i had difficulty with pouring out the correct amount as there is no kind of ‘stopper’. I believe with the 100ml version though there is a pump, good times. When applying to my towel dried hair the first thing I notice is that seems to rub into my hair better than some high street versions I have tried. There is no residue left on my hands at all (I apply by rubbing a small amount on my hands then combing through with my fingers, rubbing into the ends). The Moroccan Oil leaves my hair feeling absolutely beautiful. Silky soft , shiny and most of all healthy. Although my hair is now 100% natural I’m a little naughty with using heat but I genuinely believe it’s condition has improved since using the treatment.

My only quip (apart from being a bit pricey) is that this version is a bit too heavy for my fine hair texture. If I use a tiny bit too much my hair can become greasy really quickly. I’d be very interested in trying the Moroccan Oil Light version if I can save up some pennies as that would be better suited for me. Now to talk about the cost! I wouldn't say the price is too bad. The 100ml bottle would easily last a long time. I’ve seen people spend £20 on one shampoo so i would much rather splurge for a treatment like this which is going to last me for a long time and give me the results I want.

Pros: Makes hair smooth, shiny and soft, A little bit goes a long way, Lasts for a long time.
Cons: Expensive, Can weigh down finer hair textures.

Kat Von D Ladybird True Romance Eyeshadow Palette Review

I’ve always been intrigued by the Kat Von D makeup range, seeing it pop up in American blogger’s posts, so was set on picking up something this summer. I opted for an eyeshadow palette with an unusual array of matte neutrals. I don’t have anything quite like this in terms of colour selection. The palette learns more to the warmer side, the shades being perfect for autumn. I love me some mattes and these don’t disappoint. The texture is buttery, so much that when i swatched in store I had an “are these cream?” moment. They blend beautifully, which can often be an issue with some mattes. No patchiness over here!

The autograph pencil is another lovely product. It glides on without tugging at the lid and lasts a long time without smudging which is personally a necessity for pencil liners. The colour is not one I would wear too often, but a girl can never have too many eyeliners right?

The only thing I'm not really too fond of are the names of each eyeshadow. I don't know why, they just make me cringe a little bit. My favourite shade of the bunch has to be Tur Elise. I’ve been wearing it in the crease constantly over the past 2 months coupled with Vespertine on the lid and Harlow to blend out.

Pros: Pigmented, Blendable, Cruelty Free, Cute Packaging, Bonus Eyeliner.
Cons: Not easily available in the UK.

Bath & Body Works Frosted Cupcake Scented Candle

Transforming from a none-candle burner to one who constantly has one flickering away as I sit at my desk or read was a vastly accelerated process over this past year. Candles are a recent addition to my growing home essentials list, previously never really being one to splash my cash on their waxy goodness. Not long ago my mum gave me a Yankee candle tumbler in vanilla cupcake and I instantly fell in love. Hello my new mini obsession.

This summer I managed to pick up two of the much raved about Bath & Body Works 3-wick candles when I was in New York. Needless to say they’ve now become my favourites, I dread the day when their flames burn out. One of the scents I picked up was Frosted Cupcake, a deliciously sweet blend of fresh vanilla bean, sugar, cake batter and rich buttercream frosting. Almost good enough to eat while succeeding in dousing the upstairs of my house in its beautiful aroma. My favourite part? The value. With a price of $20 there is a regular (as in all the time) deal on which would give you two candles for $22. What a bargain! £50 on a Neom candle? Ain’t nobody got time for that.

I can guarantee I will be picking up at least four of these next time I visit the states. Believe the raves guys!

Physicians Formula Happy Booster Blush in Natural Review

Another Physicians Formula review, another longing sigh over how i wish this brand was available in the UK already. Yet again this was one of my grabby hands purchases, but oh boy am I glad it made the cut. I’ve been alternating the Happy Booster Blush with my Tarte Amazonian Clay blush for the past month depending on if i want a brighter or more natural glow.

Natural really is becoming of its name. A lovely wash of warm medium pink gives the complexion a gorgeous glow without any obnoxious glittery bits. Now the packaging is rather strange. It’s a little chunky and garish yet I cant stop handling it. The blush flips up to reveal a little flat brush, similar to the benefit ones, but I'm probably never going to use it. I love the cute embossed heart design, I'm a sucker for things like that! The pigmentation is average so you can build up the Happy Booster Blush easily for a more noticeable flush or have a subtle glow, either way the outcome will be lovely. The moon boosting jargon goes right over my head but here's what Physicians Formula have to say on the matter.
”Infused with our Happy Boost Blend, featuring Happy Skin and Euphoryl, natural plant extracts which have been shown to promote a feeling of happiness by mimicking the effect of Endorphins and helping protect the skin from environmental stress.”
Sure its a pleasure to apply but I wouldn't go as far as to say it makes me happy. Whatever floats their boat! The website also states that it smells like violet. Queue me sniffing my blush.

I have to be honest, I only actually bought this because it was half price. I’m a sucker for a good deal and have read positive reviews in the past so it was a no brainer really. As mentioned above though, I'm really glad I did. That's not to say it was expensive, it wasn't. I was just presented with so many American products that I would have rather picked up a lot of cheap things than a few pricier options.

Pros: Applies beautifully, Buildable colour, Gives a lovely glow, Lasts all day, Reasonable price.
Cons: Packing is a bit bulky, Probably wont show up as well on darker skin tones.

Benefit They’re Real Mascara Review

I’ve never really been one to regularly buy high end mascaras. Drugstore picks have always done me fine even though my lashes generally need the most help! Maybe it’s just the cheapskate in me but over £10 for a mascara has always seemed way too much. Of course I'm never one to ignore a good deal or a freebie, so when last June’s Glamour magazine had a free sample of They’re Real, I practically ran to my nearest shop. I have tried a Benefit mascara before in the form of BADgal Lash, a present for Christmas back in 2010 when I first got into makeup properly. It never really did anything for me, the brush being too thick and the product smudging around my eyes. Seeing the great reviews for They’re Real, I had much higher hopes.

The brush is plastic and perfect for those of us with shorter lashes. The fine bristles coat every lash while the ball end can get those harder to reach areas. The formula is nice, having a long wear time while applying evenly and not flaking at all. The only problem I've had is that sometimes (and i do mean only sometimes) it can transfer onto my brow bone during the day. I reach for this above all other mascaras as it really does an amazing job in giving my lashes length and volume. The only issue really is price. This thing is rather expensive.

Pros: Lengthens, Volumizes, Easy to remove with no flaking, Holds a curl.
Cons: Can sometimes smudge onto my brow bone, Expensive.

Luckily I managed to grab another They’re Real sample in Sephora as part of their beauty insider birthday gift scheme so haven’t had to repurchase yet. Whether I do or not will depend on money (things are quite tight at the moment). If that wasn’t an issue, or I could actually bring myself to blow 20 quid on a mascara, i would snap this back up in a jiffy. You can pick this up from Boots or any department store benefit counter for a whopping £19.50.

Those from across the pond may be a bit more familiar with Physicians Formula than us here in the UK, though rumour has it they could be gracing us with their pretties in the future, fingers crossed! When supermarket sweeping Walmart one hot Florida day, the Eye Booster liner made it into my basket. I think i must have read a good review about it at some point as I know I have way too many eyeliners to generally justify more. Now in my experience, felt tip liners can be hit or miss. I’ve tried some amazing ones (hello Collection felt tip liner) and some rubbish ones. The first thing I love about this is the  packaging. Housed in a metallic casing, it looks and feels so sleek while appearing pretty luxurious. The lid satisfyingly pops on and off due to the spring within while the ball inside stops the product from drying up. There are three shades, Brown, Black and Ultra Black. I picked up Black, although wish I would have gotten ultra black as this isn't quite as dark as I would like.

The Eye Booster claims to be 24 hour wear, although who really would want to wear it for that long? I can vouch for its longevity, it not budging after 12 hours (uni days are long). Now I don't know about or believe in all this lash boosting serum mumbo-jumbo, but it really is a nice product to use. The formula glides onto the eye beautifully not tugging or causing a mess as some liners can do. The tip can be hard to control in regards to line thickness although once you’ve got the hang of it, it’s very precise. Another bonus, Physicians Formula is cruelty free which has become a must for my makeup indulgences. Will I repurchase when it comes to the UK? It depends on retail price over here, but if it’s reasonable, yes! I would probably alternative between this and my trusty Collection Felt Tip Liner.

Pros: Beautiful packaging, Closes securely, Precise line, Long lasting, Cruelty free, Great for sensitive eyes, Reasonable price.
Cons: Harder to get hold of in the UK (For Now!)
