Jane Porter Cosplay

Cosplay has always been something i've been interested in, but never actually taken part in, being someone who tended to admire fabulous costumes from afar. I'm not that savvy with a sewing machine, nor really have the time to learn, and to buy outfits can work out expensive. However, having decided upon visiting Disneyland Paris for the Halloween Soiree I knew I wanted to "do it properly" and what better character to dress up as than my favourite, Jane Porter. Anyone who knows me knows of my love for Tarzan, so Jane was at the top of my list. 

Firstly I had to find someone who would make the dress. After abit of a google search and a browse on Etsy, I decided to message the lovely Bel from Closet Geek. I had seen alot of her work before as she makes the outfits for Amy and her daughter, so was confident that she would create something perfect! We had a few back and forth emails, agreeing on a material, time frame, some examples of what I wanted, my measurements and pricing. The result was this gorgeous dress that met all my expectations and more. Add a few accessories and I'm as close to Jane Porter as I'm going to get! I think for the future I definitely want to add to it by having shoe covers and a "poofier" petticoat, maybe a bit of shoulder padding. It was such a surreal evening and so many people stopped me to take my photo (awkward but fun). What a fabulous first step into the world of cosplay.

Donald Duck Disneybound

Last year was a pretty good year for Disneybounds and I really fell in love with the movement, especially when visiting Disney Parks. There's something about channeling your favourite characters in every day life that really inspires me, as I'm far from fashionable. I was lucky enough to spend my 25th birthday in Disneyland Paris, so really wanted to make an effort with my outfit. What better way to do that, than Disneybounding my favourite character, Donald Duck.
This was such a simple outfit to put together and apart from the shoes, pretty cheap. Practically everything is from ebay!

The day was absolutely amazing, being gorgeous weather and having the best time with my mum. This was my first time spending my birthday in a disney park and I cant believe im going to be lucky enough to spend my 26th in Walt Disney World. A new tradition maybe?

Recently I’ve been going through a little bit of a quarter life crisis and have felt so bored with everything. All's I seem to do is work, laze around the house and sleep. So, with summer upcoming, me and my boyfriend decided enough is enough, and that we’re going to actually do things on our days off work. No more lazing around the house watching TV for us! The first of our adventures saw us taking advantage of the gorgeous weather this week and visit Formby Beach, where we had a picnic, paddled in the sea, explored the sand dunes and took a walk around the adjacent forest. I feel so much happier having actually gotten out of the house and done something worthwhile. Of course, I had to rope Craig into taking a few cheeky outfit photos for me. I could make a photographer out of him yet! I MIGHT have also filmed a Disney fashion look book which MIGHT be going up on my channel in a few weeks. Jus’ sayin’!

The dress I am wearing is from Hot Topic and has images inspired by the film Tangled running across it. I am pretty in love with this dress, the material being lightweight, flattering to my figure and perfect for the hot weather. I paired it with a leather jacket for an edgier look, although that was soon shed in the heat. My hat is looking abit sad these days, as its endured many Florida downpours, but I adore it so just had to wear it for our day out to the beach. You cant see in these pictures, but it has a little Jack Skellington on the side, giving that subtle Disney touch.

The Girl at the Rock Show

Going to rock concerts was one of my passions throughout my teenage years. Unfortunately, I haven't been to many shows as a young adult due to many factors, timing, money, not wanting to go on my own (my friends aren't really into the same kind of music as me). Heck, I think the last gig I actually went too was Rob Zombie in London 3 years ago! Recently, I’ve really been rediscovering music and had a real urge to get back into going to shows and festivals, so decided to put together this gig inspired outfit while i browse ticketmaster. Please come to the UK on your Final Tour okay Motley Crue?

Although we’re in November, gig venues can become extremely hot so wearing light clothing with a jacket can really help. My picks would be these high waisted shorts my sister bought from topshop a few years ago (that I commandeered from her) which could easily be paired with tights to save freezing in queue, as well as a comfy tanktop with my favourite band on. Being wise with shoe choices is a must. I’ve had my feet trampled so many times in a crowd, so Doc Martens ensure I wont be hobbling home. Loose items are a big no if you’re planning on getting into the ‘thick’ of it, so a simple necklace and small backpack make sure nothing is going to get dragged off.

Everyday is Halloween

It’s coming up to that time of year when The Nightmare Before Christmas and Hocus Pocus will be a constant fixture on my TV and I find myself reliving my love for old B-Movies. That’s right, Halloween is upon us! Although I live by ‘Everyday is Halloween’, I do gravitate towards the darker side of fashion particularly at this time of year, although truth be known, i pretty much live in black clothing anyway. Today, I thought I would share with you a pre-halloween outfit combination, which of course, has a Disney twist. It’s perfect for the current climate in Britain, which strangely isn't as chilly as it should be. Additionally, the thick ‘fleece’ lined tights will give that little extra protection against the cold, and the leather jacket can be swapped out for a warmer coat if we are to see the frost swoop in before Halloween.

For the day itself I’m going to be working and don't really have any plans unfortunately, other than to curl up with my other half and watch horror films. Do you have any plans for Halloween? Are you dressing up?

A Day at the Seaside

So, yesterday me and the other half randomly decided to take a trip to Blackpool. I have many childhood memories of this seaside town, as me and my family always used to visit in autumn to see the illuminations that light up the beach front every year. It’s not the most charming place, being abit grotty around the edges, but most people from the north west of England will probably remember visiting the Blackpool Tower or the Pleasure Beach amusement park at some point in their youth. It’s a little sad really, how British seaside towns aren't doing as well as they used too, with people preferring to go abroad. These days, hen and stag parties flock to the bars here but you can still see some of that seaside charm it once had. As it was pretty warm out, I opted to wear my new Primark purchase in the form of a Hogwarts jumper. This is actually classed at nightwear, picking it up from the PJs section, but I prefer it as a jumper! I also wore my favourite Zara black skinny jeans, in preparation for the night time chill, with some battered old shoes which I wasn't afraid to get dirty. Our day consisted of walking along the beach, playing in the arcades, exploring the piers, eating seaside food (chips, donuts, ice-cream) and looking at the illuminations once night fell. I pestered the boyfriend into taking some outfit photos on the beach, something he’s going to be dragged into doing a lot more in the coming months! He’s done pretty well considering he can hardly even focus a camera! Haha.

Black Collar Crochet

Do you ever spot an item of clothing that you constantly think about and keep going back to look at, all the while trying to come up with a reason to justify it? That is what this top was for me. I must have looked at it on ASOS over 20 times and oooh-arrd over it in store on many occasions. The £35 price tag, although not expensive to some, is pretty steep for me who usually wont spend more than £20 on a top and even that’s pushing it. I have recently made a decision though, to invest in some good quality pieces for my wardrobe as I’m often plagued with the “I have nothing to wear” feeling. The top is a t-shirt fit with a black collar and lace overlay in a crochet style. It’s incredibly comfy and classier than your normal t-shirt, giving a more dressed up look without being too over the top. I paired it with faux leather trousers and my new heeled boots, which are actually really comfortable. I walked around London all day wearing them and didn’t have any pain. Our day consisted of visiting the Science Museum (Craig loved this so much), Harrods, a stroll through Kensington Gardens with a peek at the Peter Pan Statue as well as a ride on the London Eye, rounding it off with a meal at the Rainforest Cafe.

The Weekday Shirt

For my trip to London last week I wanted to ditch my usual jeans, t-shirt and skate shoes attire for something a little more dressy but still comfy and casual. I couldn't resist picking up this top on Romwe the other month, it’s still casual yet has a smarter edge while the material is thin and loose making it perfect for spring. I wore it with some of the $7 jeans from Forever 21 which I picked up in New York last year and although they are mega comfy, if worn for more than one day they start to loose their shape (as can be seen in these pictures). I’m thinking its time I ditch my bargain buys and invest in a good quality pair of black skinny jeans. Any recommendations? To finish off I wore a pair of Brogues and a blazer style jacket for when it got a little chilly, both from New Look. My nails are also the glue on £1 ones from Primark, which are absolutely perfect for a city break. It saved me having to worry about nail polish chipping issues. On this particular day I had to get up rather early to head to my Visa appointment at the US embassy and got some joy out of joining the early morning work commuters on the underground. Gosh I love London. I’m totally going to make the move there at some point in the near future. For the rest of the day we kept it pretty chilled, taking a walk through Hyde Park, visiting Buckingham Palace and exploring the Natural History Museum.

It was also my boyfriend Craig’s first time taking some pictures for me, heck Its probably his first time taking photos in general. He doesn't even know how to use a compact or a camera phone! Although I think he got the hang of it after some guidance. I can make a budding photographer out of him yet! The Black Widow

Since my pre-teens I’ve had a more alternative look, from bright hair colours, a gothic dress style and darker makeup. More recently I’ve been looking a lot more natural, through having my own hair colour while working for Disney and dressing in clothing which is appropriate to my teaching position. I’ve been itching to dye my hair over the past few weeks, but i also really want to keep it healthy and grow it very long. Enter Geisha Wigs. I discovered this store through reading Amii’s reviews, her praising them most highly. After debating what style to get, I took the plunge and ordered Black Widow. I had black hair for many years during my teens, and have always have temptations to go back so played it safe for my first wig experience. I’m not going to lie, delivery took a long time. My wig was out of stock when I bought it so it had to be ordered in ( the process of which is clearly outlined on the website). I placed my order on January 22nd but after a month I still hadn't received anything. After a few emails it turns out that batch was stuck at customs, and I did finally receive Black Widow about 5 weeks after ordering. One thing I would like to point out, is that a quick email saying my order had been delayed would have been nice. Not everyone would check facebook/twitter for status updates. Other than that, I am very pleased with the service and do understand that things can take a little bit longer with indie businesses.

 

The wig itself arrived neatly packaged and bundled up so as not to tangle the hairs. Having never used a wig before, i wasn't really sure what to expect from it. It doesn't feel like real hair, but it is still soft and easy to style. It is also a little shinier than real hair with the top section taking a little more time for me to make it look somewhat real. The reactions I have had to this has been mixed. Some have asked me if it is a wig while others thought I had dyed my hair. I guess it depends on environmental conditions! I would personally have no problem wearing Black Widow out of the house, especially accompanied by a hat as there would then be less of a chance of the root bits going astray. Overall I’m very happy with my first wig experience and will be 100% purchasing more to experiment with in the future (particularly with some planned cosplays coming up).

Beating Hearts Baby

There has been one item in particular that has stood out as a staple in my winter wardrobe this year. After seeing a few people rocking the burgundy heart print shirt from New Look I fell in love, opting to get the black and white version. You really can’t take the monochrome away from the girl…
The material feels gorgeous and the loose fitting makes it unbelievably comfortable. It’s casual yet I've still found it suitable for wearing to my teaching placement. It’s a great affordable dupe for the popular Burberry heart print shirt at only £17.99. A winner all around I’d say!

Diverging away from my wardrobe, the past week has flown by in the most unproductive manner. Well…when it comes to university work and blogging. I spent the weekend with my boyfriend while on Monday I headed off to Leeds to visit my Disney room-mate Hayley, Tuesday being spent in university. I now have a week off though, so expect extra posts to compensate for the ones I've missed! If only I could transfer some of that motivation to the 6000 word essay on curriculum theory that I have to do…

Polka-Dot Skirt

It is a rare thing indeed to see me in a skirt. I pretty much live in black skinny jeans, but when I saw this Polka Dot skirt in Primark for £3 the bargain hunter in me snapped it up. It probably won’t get alot of everyday wear but it will be useful to have for work wear. The jacket is one of my absolute favourites and I wear it constantly. It’s appropriate for teaching, looking almost like a blazer but still appropriate for everyday. I had my first teaching observation this week, and although my subject (Photography) is more lenient with dress code as there’s alot of practical work and chemical use, I should probably have some more semi-formal clothing for assessments and future OFSTED inspections.
